Education

 Education is a key contributing factor to the growth of every economy. Passionate about education, Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu is determined to increase access to quality education at all levels within the constituency. From ground-based research, key needs have been identified which have been transcribed into promises. The following sub thematic areas are the key promises that were identified under education.

 

1. Replacement of all chalk boards in government schools with marker boards

During a tour to schools within the constituency, it was identified that most schools within the constituency were using chalk boards which pose a health risk to both teachers and students. This promise is aimed at increasing quality of teaching and creating a friendly and modernized learning environment in schools in the constituency.

• Visit schools within the constituency and quantify number of marker boards needed to be supplied.

2. An annual teachers award for government and private schools in the constituency

Teachers form the core and backbone of every educational institution. The office of the Member of Parliament is instituting an annual teacher’s award which will recognize and award deserving teachers working for student excellence, organizational performance and impact in the constituency. There will be separate awards for winners at basic and secondary school levels.

• Establish an award scheme in alignment with the existing national criteria.

• Establish a criterion for assessment at all levels.

• Identify and agree on wining prize (a citation, plaque, a mini car, land, cash etc.)

A Scholarship scheme fund for higher education

The office of the Member of Parliament recognizes the financial burden that families of students in the constituency face in attaining a goal of higher education. The scholarship scheme is aimed at fully or partially supporting the tuition fees of brilliant but needy students who have qualified for tertiary diplomas. Category of qualification includes institutes, colleges, and universities.

• Set up a scholarship fund with seed capital of 100,000ghc

3. Annual Interschool debate

It is the expectation of the office of the Member of Parliament that an annual interschool debate competition is instituted in collaboration with the Ghana Education service to become the most prestigious inter-school competition in Ghana. Participants representing their schools will be divided into two categories being basic school and secondary school sections. (Category I will include students at the JSS level and Category II will include students at the senior high school level). The annual debate is expected to include private and public schools in the constituency.

• Identify and converge quality debaters from the constituency to take part in constituency debates

• Develop a document policy based on arising local and national issues from the debate.

• Develop the interschool debate to be a reference point for national future school debate competitions.

• Create a social network of excellent debaters.

• Create an environment to link debaters to available resources and opportunities provided by sponsors.

• Organize a stakeholder meeting in partnership with the Ghana Education Service to communicate the purpose and mode of implementation of the debate competition.

• Establish a debate club committee to develop a framework for the competition

• Set up a first meeting of all stakeholders (club committee members, school heads, GES, etc.) to discuss the framework and its implementation.

 

 

4. Annual award to the best law student at University of Professional Studies.

The University of Professional Studies which is recognized as one of the Nation’s top tertiary institutions is located in the Madina constituency. The office of the Member of Parliament is instituting an annual award scheme awarding the University’s best law student for each academic year. As a human rights lawyer, the mission of the Member of Parliament with this award scheme is to encourage more students in the constituency into the field of law.

Timeline

First award is scheduled to be implemented at the next graduation for the Faculty of Law at the University of Professional Studies. This will then be implemented annually and at the end of every academic year.

 

 

5. Educational Support to basic and second cycle schools in the constituency

In contributing to achieving the sustainable development goal 4(a) at constitutional level, the office of the Member of Parliament wishes to contribute to overall quality of education through creating healthy and productive school environments. This will be implemented at the basic and secondary level through the provision of educational support items to provide an inclusive and effective learning environment for all. Types of items donated will vary per school in response to findings from a need’s assessment.

• Communicate project milestones and success to all constituents through efficient media means.

• Run an evaluation assessment to gather data for prudential purposes.

 

Timeline

Project implementation will begin in the first year of the 4-year term of the Member of Parliament and will be repeated annually.

 

 

6. Touring of basic schools and second cycle schools in the constituency

Accessibility is a trade mark of the office of the Member of Parliament. Members of the constituency including the future generation should see, communicate with and receive inspiration and mentorship from Hon. Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu. A tour to schools within the constituency will enable the Member of Parliament receive on ground information and personally analyze needs and the progress of education on ground level. These tours will be done in collaboration with the donation tour in order to efficiently maximize all resources including time.
